David Mitchell- 2024 QF Athlete
We have 19 of our members make it to the Quarterfinals of the CrossFit Games this year. These individuals are the top 25% of the field. What helps them reach this level of success? Lets find out.
David qualified for Men (65+)
1. How often do you train? What do you do for recovery? What does your nutrition look like?
I come to class 5 days a week unless I am traveling or have another conflict. I religiously take Saturday and Sunday off. My Nutrition is a great example of what not to do. I don't really like vegetables and don't drink a lot of water but I somehow survive.
2. Why do you workout? Do you like competing?
I work out to be functionally fit - living life without restrictions. I also like coming to class because the people are a lot of fun and very nice people. I don't really like competing, I get internally competitive and I don't want to do that anymore.
3. What are your top 3 favorite workout movements?
I like gymnastics although I can't do everything. I'm not great a heavy lifting but I like cleans.
4. What was your goal for the Open? What is your goal for QF?
My goal was to qualify which is a challenge as "younger" people enter the age group. I don't have high expectations for the QF, I am just curious how many of the workouts I will be able to do.
5. What is your daytime gig?
I am retired, but worked as a chemist in industry and taught science at Cecil - now I am looking for the next challenge
6. How do you balance working out with life?
Not a real issue, I have time. When I worked, I probably could not have found the time at all.
7. Do you have any other hobbies?
I like to fiddle with computers, science and 3D printing.
8. What advice would you give to ....
someone just starting their workout journey?
someone wanting to reaching QF in the future?
I have never been athletic or thought I could qualify for a QF - I think the secret is to outlive others in your age group. Seriously, be consistent, work on your weaknesses and stay healthy.
