These are the types of Strength You Need

Let's clarify the distinction between absolute and relative strength. Absolute strength refers to the sheer amount of weight one can lift, while relative strength considers this in relation to body weight. Both are crucial metrics, with relative strength often playing a more significant role in overall fitness prowess.

However, in our training realm, I find it more practical to categorize strength into two domains: barbell strength and gymnastic strength. Barbell strength focuses on traditional weightlifting movements, whereas gymnastic strength pertains to bodyweight exercises. While improving relative strength is vital, we mustn't overlook gymnastic strength, as excelling in one doesn't guarantee proficiency in the other.

When strategizing our strength training regimen, we should incorporate a mix of dynamic and static movements. Dynamic exercises, like back squats and pull-ups, emphasize movement, while static exercises, such as paused squats and isometric holds, build strength in stationary positions. Additionally, implementing tempo work enhances control and stability, fostering well-rounded strength development.

In a group class setting, it's essential to align our training with our individual goals. If strength is our priority, we can modify workouts to emphasize strength-building exercises. While this may seem monotonous to some, committing to structured strength training yields long-term benefits, accelerating our progress in the gym.

Indeed, consistency is key. Just as bodybuilders adhere to fixed training schedules, integrating structured strength training into our routine cultivates steady improvement. By marrying structured strength work with varied, engaging workouts, we strike a balance that keeps us motivated and propels us towards our fitness aspirations.
