November Spotlight Member - Sue Palmer

  1. How did you get started on your CrossFit journey?
My husband Paul, had been going for several years. I knew that he enjoyed CrossFit and I had been around the gym quite a bit. In an effort to get in a little better shape I decided to do some personal training. After a few months of personal training I decided to start taking classes. I started with Legends class, then began the regular group classes.

  2. How many years have you been a member at Equity?
    A little over 3 years.

  3. Best advice for someone thinking of joining Equity?
Please don't hesitate to start. I was never an "athletic" person. I never played sports in high school or college but the Equity community and the coaches have always made me feel very comfortable in my fitness journey. The coaching is excellent, especially for a new person.

  4. What was your first impression and how has that changed?
I was very intimidated by the fitness level of the members when I first started going to classes. I really didn't feel like I fit in. Over the years I have come to realize that everybody is very encouraging and that no matter what your level of fitness is as long as you try your best you are part of the Equity family.

  5. How has the gym improved your life? How will the gym improve your life in the future?
As a grandmother of 14 grandchildren I feel the single greatest benefit is the strength & energy that I have to remain active in the lives of my grandchildren. My goal is to always maintain a reasonable fitness level so that I will never have to see my family do things while I watch from the couch. I want my grandchildren to see me as an active part of their lives. I want to be able to get down on the floor, and play with them, pick them up, without difficulty. These are things I see my friends having trouble with, and I don’t want that to happen to me.

  6. What do you do for a living and how has CrossFit impacted that?
I am a retired nurse and as I mentioned above the greatest impact that CrossFit has had in my life is greater strength and energy which allows me to be very active with my family.

  7. What is your proudest moment at the gym and/or favorite moment?
This isn’t a moment at the gym, but I feel it is directly related to my training at the gym… About a year ago my husband and some friends decided they wanted to hike the Grand Canyon in one day. This is a 22 mile hike from the South Rim to the North Rim. I had never attempted anything like this in my entire life but I decided I wanted to attempt this hike. Since I had been active in CrossFit for several years I had a decent base from which I could start training for the hike. For almost 6 months we trained for this hike. Each week we would do more and more bleacher steps and our hikes got longer and longer. I also continued my regular classes at Equity. On October 12 2022 I had one the proudest moments in my life. I completed the hike. It was the hardest physical challenge that I ever faced. There were many times during the hike that I heard Berek’s voice in my head, “Do the hard thing!” I told him that helped me get through some tough moments! Without my Equity training this never would have happened!!!!
